My Exercise: Energy Saving Survey

Two years ago, the citizens of Tarakan always experience a local black out every day for four hours. According to the head of Tarakan Electric Plant (PLN Tarakan) this was done to minimize the electric consumption every night. Today we have no problem with electricity, but as a junior high school student I wonder if I can take part in minimizing the electric consumption. Therefore, I conduct a simple survey on Energy Saving. I want to measure monthly electric consumption in my own house and seek for ways to minimize the expense.

First, I will show the raw data of the electric consumption in my house. Then I will explain further the consumption. There are 23 items that are collected in this survey.  A 50 watt refrigerator is on for 360 hours every month. It produces 18 kwH and a bill of Rp 15.660,00. A 205 watt TV is on for 480 hours every month. It produces 98,4 kwH and a bill of Rp 85.608,00. A 25 watt  radio tape player is on for 90 hours every month. It produces 2,25 kwH and a bill of Rp 1.957,50. A 45 watt Fan is on 30 hours every month. It produces 1,35 kwH and a bill of  Rp 1.174,50. A 350 watt rice cooker is on for 30 hours every month. It produces 10,5 kwH and a bill of Rp 9.135,00. A 35 watt majig jar is on for 360 hours every month. It produces 12,6 kwH and a bill of Rp 10.962,00. A 79 watt playstation is on for 120 hours every month. It produces 9,48 kwH and a bill of Rp 8.247,00. A 11 watt appliance squeeze electrically is on for 0,2 hours every month. It produces 0,002 kwH and a bill of Rp 1,91. A 250 watt blender is on for 1 hours every month. It produces 0,25 kwH and a bill of Rp 217,50. A 350 watt dispenser is on for 120 hours every month. It produces 42 kwH  and a bill of Rp 36.540,00. A 300 watt electrics iron is on for 10 hours every month. It produces 3 kwH and a bill of Rp 2.610,00. A 25 watt power DVD is on for 3 hours every month. It produces 0,075 kwH and a bill of Rp 65,25. A 18 watt family room bulb 1 is on for 240 hours every month. It produces 4,32  kwH and a bill of Rp 3.758,40. A 20 watt family rom bulb 2 is on of 10 hours every month. It produces 0,2 kwH and a bill of Rp 174,00. A 40 watt living room bulb is on for 120 hours every month. It produces 4,8 kwH and a bill of Rp 4.176,00. A 15 watt next bedroom bulb is on for 240 hours every month. It produces 3,6 kwH and a bill of Rp 3.132,00. A 8 watt bedroom bulb behind is on for 240 hours every month. It produces 1,92 kwH and a bill of Rp 1.670,40. 3 pieces of 5 watt light bulbs are turned on 620 hours every month. It produces 3.1 kwH and a bill of Rp  2.697,00 (next terrace bulb, terrace bulb behind, and bathroom bulb). A 25 watt kitchen bulb is on for 120 hours every month. It produces 3 kwH and a bill of Rp 2.610,00. A 65 watt laptop charger is on for 240 hours every month. It produces 15,6 kwH and a bill of Rp 13.572,00. A 50 watt mobile phone charger 480 hours every month. It produces 24 kwH and a bill of Rp 20.880,00.

Second, of all the house appliances, some of them are on for long time. For example television for 480 hours, majig jar for 360 hours, and playstation for 120 hours. Television is on the longest of all. I may decrease the frequency of using the television to minimize the monthly bill. Then, I have 9 light bulbs in my house. If all of those bulbs are on at the same time, they will produce very much energy. Therefore, I may turn off some of them to minimize the monthly bill. Television, rice cooker, blender, dispenser, and electrics iron, I need to replace some of them with more economical energy to minimize the monthly bill.

In conclusion, the citizens of Tarakan always experience a local black out every four days for four hours. According to the head of Tarakan Electric Plant (PLN Tarakan) this was done to minimize the electric consumption every night. As a junior high school student, I can show you that individual family can take part in minimizing the energy usage every single night by turning off the electric appliances that are not being used. They can also replace electric appliances that are too consumptive.
